in which I allow my SkypeIn number to expire
Category travel
As you probably know, I'm a big fan of Skype. It's not perfect, but having a $2.95 per month subscription for unlimited domestic "SkypeOut" calling means I only need to use cellular minutes if I'm not near a wireless hotspot... which I imagine my employer appreciates, since, while working almost entirely from home (for now... more on that in a moment), I'm frequently on the phone with clients and, sans landline, would otherwise be incurring a massive Blackberry bill. But my favorite Skype feature is "SkypeIn": for $5 per month per number, I can maintain a "real" number, so clients can call me on Skype instead of my Blackberry, even if they don't use Skype. When we moved to Durham, I bought a 919 number so we'd have a valid local number (with free voicemail) without having to change our personal mobile numbers just so people here could avoid long-distance charges. That number expires tomorrow, but instead of renewing it, I instead bought a 678 number, because on August 10, we're moving to Canton, Georgia. This will place us within convenient driving distance of the Lotus 911 headquarters in Kennesaw, so while I may occasionally still work from home, it'll be the exception instead of the norm.
We're quite excited about this move: we found a great apartment in an ideal location (ironically, slightly cheaper than what we'd be paying if we just renewed our lease here), I'll have even more opportunity to collaborate with my colleagues than I already do (Laura jokes that Nathan and I will be hanging out every night, braiding each others' hair), and whenever we get a hankering for "Condoleeza Rice Pilaf", we can just wander down to the Right Wing Tavern. Yeah, okay, so we probably won't be spending much time there. But in general, we really like the area and look forward to living there. Now if I can just talk Southwest into adding some Atlanta flights, we'll be set. So, to briefly recap, if you currently have my 919 number in your contacts list, let me know and I'll give you the new 678 number (actually, I bet if you look hard enough in this post, you can find it)... and for those who might be curious once they see it, yes, the 1337 it contains is intentional.
