RAMtastic

Category diy
After putting it off for a year and a half, I finally doubled the RAM in "the footlong" (my 12.1" Inspiron). I used to be able to limp along just fine with only 1 GB, but lately, trying to run Notes 8 + a separate instance of vanilla Eclipse, Notes 7 (yes, with 8 also open at the same time), Firefox and IE 7, GIMP... yeah, it was time.

By the way, to whichever genius at Dell decided it would be a great idea to make one RAM slot quite easily accessible on the bottom of the Inspirons but bury the other under the keyboard so that you can only get to it by prying loose the panel containing the power button, then unscrewing and removing the keyboard, and finally, unscrewing and removing another panel underneath the keyboard... bravo, sir. Way to think outside of the box there.

Gravatar Image1 - I just did the same thing on my Thinkpad and had to go through the same trouble. I guess they all build laptops the same way these days.

Gravatar Image2 - I'm wondering if it has something to do with heat dissipation... maybe putting both RAM chips in the same spot causes them to overheat or something, since they're not as easy to cool in a laptop as they are on an ATX board.

Gravatar Image3 - I bought a Dell Precision M90 with 2GB already. It's simply two screws on the bottom and there the SODIMM's are. The easiest I've ever seen were some older Compaq's. There were two small latches on the bottom edge of the keyboard that you could trip with the tip of a ballpoint pen, then the whole keyboard lifted up and you had access to the memory slots. It was so easy I could walk end users through it.
